[attr="class,"bioentry"]Lorcan Tyrell is a highly respected politician, commander, and lord throughout the Seven Kingdoms and beyond. The embodiment of honor and justice, Lorcan follows the laws and regulations of Westeros to the letter, and expects the same of others. He is wise enough to recognize when law or tradition is being used unjustly, and will take it upon himself to right laws and weed out injustice wherever it springs up. [break][break] He is not a man to tolerate insubordination, believing wholeheartedly in one's duty to their house and their kingdom, and is vocal with those who act rebelliously. Lorcan never shies from stating his opinion (unless it is more advantageous to mask it) and truly hates cruelty and injustice. He is quick to anger in the face of possible betrayal, and is absolutely ruthless in combat and politics. When in a state of peace and he's out of the public eye, he carries himself with an air of frailty fitting for his age. [break][break] Due to years of experience, Lorcan Tyrell very rarely shows any sign of distress or surprise when confronted with an unexpected turn of events. Lorcan is very loyal to the Iron Throne and House Tyrell, and takes his duties as Lord Tyrell and Warden of the South very seriously, expecting the same from the rest of his house and his bannermen. His loyalty is so great that he is willing to sacrifice himself if need be, believing it his duty to lay down his life if it means peace for the realm. [break][break] Despite his stern and steadfast personality, it is not to say he has no compassion. In his youth, he was popular among the smallfolk not just for his good looks and skill in tourneys, but also for his gracious and charitable ventures throughout the realm. Lorcan loves his family dearly, especially his grand-children, and will go to great and bloody lengths to protect them from harm. Many describe his affection for his family as "tough love", as his compliments are usually thinly veiled beneath mocks and insults. [attr="class","bioheader"]history. [attr="class,"bioentry"]Lord of Highgarden. Lord Paramount of the Reach and the Mander. Warden of the South. Defender of the Marches. Savior of Lys. Master of Ships. Bitterthorn. Old Man Tyrell. [break][break] Lorcan Tyrell has gone by many titles and just as many names. He was born in the year 211AC to Lord Lukas Tyrell and Lady Ellyn Tyrell (née Redwyne). Nothing but the blood of the Reach ran through his honorable veins, instilling in him the traditional qualities of virtue, chivalry, and justice that was common along the waters of the Mander. [break][break] The Lord of Highgarden is an elderly man now, but once upon a time he was considered to be one of the greatest knights in Westeros. His skill in battle even reached the distant ears of those in Essos, and many challengers have sought him out over the years only to be struck down by the lord. [break][break] In his youth, Lorcan Tyrell was groomed to be the future Lord of Highgarden. His lord father possessed both a Tyrell and Hightower descent, and his rule was strong in the Reach. Maesters of the Citadel were wise to come from Oldtown to give personal lessons and a stellar education to the heir of Highgarden. They taught him history and arithmatic, of the land and its many peoples, but they could not teach him of the warrior's life. [break][break] With so many houses sworn to the Tyrells, his father emphasized the need for Lorcan to know them all. He spent much of his youth traveling throughout the Reach to better understand his people. Learning from so many lords in such a short span of his life, Lorcan was wise beyond his years before he was even a man grown. It was not just the lords he learned from, but his bannerman, the smallfolk, the hedge knights, and the bastards. [break][break] In time, Lorcan was loved by his people. He was honorable, understanding, charitable, and wise. His skills were unmatched in both tournaments and battle. Eventually his father permitted him to travel outside of the Reach to spread his influence and growing favor among the people. It was during one particular tournament outside of the Reach in King's Landing that Lorcan unseated the Great Bastard Aegor Rivers, also known as Bittersteel, and then proceeded to engage him in single combat when Aegor pulled him from his horse and attempted to kill him. Lorcan defeated Bittersteel by removing his hands, but ultimately spared his life and allowed the legitimized bastard to be taken into the custody of the king. [break][break]After the battle, the people began to call him Bitterthorn in recognition of his house sigil and his first great victory. The name would stick for the rest of his life. [break][break] Lorcan had dreams of becoming a Kingsguard, but he knew better than most that his duty was to become the eventual Lord of Highgarden after his father's passing. His renown continued to grow throughout the Seven Kingdoms, but his legendary skill and fame would not reach its peak until the War of the Ninepenny Kings. [break][break] The War of the Ninepenny Kings was a conflict involving several of the Free Cities, started by a group of ambitious men known as the Band of Nine. The Band of Nine had met their goals with initial success, conquering the Disputed Lands and securing the Free City of Tyrosh. King Aegon V received news of the Band of Nine's intentions of invading Westeros and immediately called upon the Tyrell banners. [break][break] Lorcan's father rallied the Redwyne Fleet and sailed east where they made landfall. During a cavalry battle in the Disputed Lands that would later be known as the Battle of the Bloody Rose, Lord Lukas Tyrell took an arrow in his throat and died on the battlefield. Lorcan took command of his father's forces and proceeded to annihilate the Band of Nine. Several of the Nine were able to flee, but future ambitions were extinguished when Lorcan executed six of the Nine before the Archon of Tyrosh. [break][break] When Lorcan returned to Westeros and put his father to rest, he was named Lord of Highgarden and Warden of the South. His mother passed shortly after, dying of grief from the loss of her husband, and he would've been alone if not for an arranged marriage his father had made when he was very young. Lorcan therefore married Leyla Hightower and further strengthened the unity of the Reach. [break][break] Children were born, nursed, educated, trained. Lorcan emphasized the necessity of foreign influence on his children and, in the years to come, his grandchildren as well. He did not want his blood to be unprepared for the conflicts of the future, and he had them learn about battle and politics. The greatest lesson he tried to instill in House Tyrell was the preservation and growth of their house, which he personally felt was unprepared should another great war break out in the Seven Kingdoms. [break][break]Over the years, Lorcan Tyrell became a close friend of King Aegon V, becoming so trusted that he served as the king's Master of Ships. While still head of House Tyrell, he passed on the title of Lord to his son when he came of age so that he could better serve the king in King's Landing. With the Reach's armies, the royal navy and the Redwyne fleet at his command, the Lord of Highgarden became the single most powerful commander in the Known World. [break][break] After the death of Aegon the Unlikely, Lorcan served for a time as Hand of the King to Jaehaerys II, until the sickly young kind could name one of his own. Lorcan would serve for ten years before Jaehaerys named another Hand. He continued to sit on the Small Council, serving once again as the Master of Ships. The legendary Bitterthorn destroyed any enemies that surfaced from the sea. Pirates, smugglers, and sellsails feared him, and the people of Westeros respected him. [break][break] The death of Jaehaerys was no surprise to the oldest living Tyrell, but it could not have come at a more terrible time. His son, the acting Lord of Highgarden, died a week before on a hunting trip. Lorcan was forced to return to the Reach to put his son to rest and become the acting lord once again, which forced him to be away from the king's side when he passed on. [attr="class","bioheader"]inventory. [attr="class,"bioentry"]TRUTH: Originally the sword of a Lysene noble, it was wielded by one of the Band of Nine that Lorcan executed after winning the Battle of the Bloody Rose. The Valyrian steel longsword has not been decorated like others of its type; the Lord of Highgarden prefers to honor the sword's name and keep it "as simple as Truth." He keeps it sheathed in simple black leather, and it possesses a polished rosewood grip. It is recognizable by the swirling patterns in the dark steel and its light weight, but it is unremarkable and appears mundane until pulled from its sheath. Lorcan had declared it the ancestral sword of House Tyrell. [break][break] VISENYA: The destrier of Lorcan Tyrell is a tall and strong horse, both well-trained and high-spirited. The magnificent steed was a gift from King Jaehaerys II after Lorcan won a bet over which of his grandchildren would flee to Essos first. She is almost pure white, and named so because her coloration resembles the silver-gold hair of House Targaryen. [break][break] WEIRWOOD STAFF: Crafted from a gnarled branch of one of the Three Sisters — the trio of weirwoods in Highgarden's godswood — this staff is used by Old Man Tyrell to support his weight and help him walk on the days his old bones feel weak and his body is tired. It is a crooked staff of polished weirwood as tall as Lorcan, and it is rumored that Lorcan can kill a man with the staff just as easily as he can with a sword.
