Jaehaerys Blackfyre is the secondborn son of King Aenar Targaryen II, spawned from the intimacy between the King and a serving girl in the Red Keep. While unwilling to murder his child, Aenar could not legitimise his bastard and allow an “impure” descendant of Targaryen blood to remain in King's Landing. Thus, he sent the child away to Volantis to be raised by a branch of House Targaryen: far enough away to not be a complication, and in safe enough hands to have a quality of life befitting his son.
Jaehaerys proved to be a Targaryen in all but name, inheriting the grace, intellect, and physical features of the House. He also inherited their madness. The denial of Jaehaerys’ birth-right of being a prince, simply because he was born to the wrong mother, became a frustration that grew over time into obsession and ambition. The blood of dragons flowed through him, and it was his nature to rule. He quickly made a name for himself in Volantis as The Returning Dragon, the Targaryen bastard that sought to make Volantis, a remnant of the legendary Valyria, as prosperous as its predecessor. With an unchallenged royal lineage that could be traced back to Valyria, expansionist policies that would see Volantis regain lost land, and the support of the Temple of the Lord of Light; Jaehaerys was elected to become a Triarch of Volantis.
Being raised in Volantis, Jaehaerys has rejected the Westerosi worship of The Seven and has put his faith in R’hllor, believing that all answers lie within the fire: be it divine or draconic. He is known to make generous donations to the Temple of the Lord of Light, including the sacrifice of slaves and criminals sentenced to execution.
