Below is the timeline that describes the general history of Winds of Winter. While much of it pulls from canon influences, particularly in the older years, it remains non-canon. 0 BC - Aegon Targaryen lands on the mouth of Blackwater Bay with his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys. The hill upon where they make their first fort would one day become the seat of King’s Landing - and the Iron Throne
- The Baratheon Storm King leads his army against the Targaryen invaders and suffers heavy losses against the dragons despite superior numbers. After bending the knee, Aegon raises the Baratheons as the Lords of Storm’s End and the Storm Lands.
- Aegon and his sisters next move to the Riverlands. They incinerate Harren the Black in his great castle of Harrenhal the same day its last stone is placed. The campaign to push back the Ironborn begins in earnest, with the now unhindered aid of House Tully and their allies. House Tully is rewarded as Lords of Riverrun and the Trident.
- King Gardener’s advance forces the Targaryen conquerors to quickly look south. They meet the great Reach host and, despite far worse numerical odds, succeed in roasting tens of thousands alive - including King Gardener. Aegon himself moves onto Highgarden, where he is warmly welcomed by the Tyrells. In return, he raises them as Lords of Highgarden and the Reach, and his Wardens of the South.
- The campaign against the Iron Islanders resumes. Aegon and his sisters succeed in pushing them back into the sea and burning many ships to cinders. They permit the Ironborn to keep their lands and castles, but vow that their return to the Old Way will result in their utter annihilation.
- The Targaryens then turn southwest once more, toward Casterly Rock. The clever Lannisters watched their neighbors suffer greatly at the dragons, and upon Aegon’s arrival willingly bent the knee. In return, the Lannisters rose as Lords of Casterly Rock and the Westerlands, as well as Aegon’s Wardens of the West.
1 AC - Aegon is crowned in Oldtown and anointed under the light of the Seven, in sight of both newer vassals and his loyal sisters. He is proclaimed Aegon I Targaryen, First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, and Protector of the Realm. But the Seven Kingdoms are not yet unified. After his ceremony, Aegon looks North, Visenya Northeast, and Rhaenys South.
- Visenya secures the Vale by flying her dragon up to the Eyrie and, without any bloodshed, has the Arryns submit. She raises them as Lords of the Eyrie and Vale, and Aegon’s Wardens of the East. She even lets the young Arryn lordling fly her dragon, too.
- Aegon trudges past the trident and finds his first northern resistance in the Neck. The Targaryen soldiers suffered heavy losses due to climate, terrain, and unfamiliarity with the environment. Even with other armies added to their own, pushing past the Neck proved far too arduous and costly. However, dragonfire burned through snowfall and forced the Stark’s to bend the knee. Aegon knew he needed Northerners to rule the North in his name, and thus rose House Stark back up as Lords of Winterfell and Wardens of the North.
- Rhaenys proved the least successful with her campaign in Dorne. The Dornish only engaged in sudden hit-and-run tactics. They hid amongst sands and shadows, leaving their cities entirely abandoned as Rhaenys flew overhead and her men marched through the desert. Sunspear itself seemed abandoned, and the Martells could not be found. She would end the campaign early to meet her siblings in King’s Landing, which had only begun construction.
- The Targaryen siblings reconvene in King's Landing and begin their dynasty, though the war against Dorne continues.
10 AC - Rhaenys’ dragon is killed during the campaign in Dorne near Hellholt. She herself is not found and assumed dead. Such marks the first death of a Targaryen dragon in Westeros. Many would follow in the years to come...
