[PTab=BIOGRAPHY]
Holding each other like ransom notes
a bastard's bastard
Shennen's father was a bastard son from House Rowan, a vassal house sworn to House Tyrell. Her father apparently did not know of this until twenty-three years ago when Shennen had already been born from a commoner. For years, he'd served as a loyal knight, having earned the title through hard work and skill. With this knowledge, he saw himself in his bastard and felt compelled to provide an opportunity to become a knight as he did. Not wanting for his adultery to be exposed, he hired a competent trainer to work closely with Shennen's family and eventually teach her the martial arts. Shennen's father was not aware that his bastard was a girl, having been told by servants he'd sent to spy on them that she was a strong, healthy boy. As Shennen had the face of a man, the trainer did not realize she was a girl either until she started to bleed. Shennen's father died from an infection before he could learn of Shennen's true sex.
Shennen knew nothing of the hand her knight father had in her life. As far as she could tell, she lived an ordinary life. She could cook, sew, and clean just as well as she could brawl, lift, and swing. But as expected, her gaunt appearance was a fascination in the town. The men were quite kind to her and the boys were too scared to say a word. It was always the girls and the women who tried to hurt her with their eyes and words. Somehow, they knew she couldn't hurt them in return.
Shennen's trainer did not believe that she could become a knight despite her skills, so he paved the way for her to become a handmaiden for House Rowan. To his surprise, she had become popular with the family and had been told that Shennen saved the Rowan princess twice. The trust and care of House Rowan on Shennen allowed her the opportunity to be married to one of its knights, Robert Jadesworn, a young knight who was seven years her junior. Many said they were in love, but some found the relationship to be closer to a lord and his vassal, where Shennen served her husband with devotion.
Shennen's devotion went as far as following her husband to the Wall after he had allegedly committed rape. The weather weakened Robert but it wasn't the flu that took his life. Waking up in the middle of the night to answer the call of nature, Robert made a misstep and slipped on ice. His head hit a rock, dying. Shennen remained on the Wall to serve the life sentence Robert failed to do. Though they tried to send her back, the Night's Watch relented to letting her stay, partially on behalf of House Rowan that helped provide more to the Watch since Shennen's stay. In time, they thought that Shennen was a good example to shame lazy and weak brothers. She'd been the silent lurker of the Watch for three years.
