In its own right, House Reed of Greywater Watch was a powerful beacon of strength for the swamp and marshlands of the Neck, and it's firstborn child even more so. Catryn, being the firstborn daughter of Lord Reed, was all but groomed and bred into a position to be married off to an influential lord. It wasn't her fate to rule over the crannogmen, yet this didn't stop the blood of a ruler from pumping through the young woman's veins.

Catryn--at the behest of her own will--readily took up the skills of her people along with the tools to be a Lady of prestige, becoming quickly indoctrinated into the lifestyle of being familiar with one's area, various subtle methods of killing, and the participation in guerrilla tactics to seize victory. Eventually the cocktail of this training to be both a highborn noble and a hardened fighter crafted a mask for Catryn Reed. On the outside she was the picture of sophistication and class, the appropriately behaved suitor, ready and eager to be married off, to procreate. Inside, she carried a growing infant of her own, the war hawk personality that dominates most of her character. In the end, she became the ideal warm-blooded Northerner; loyal, strong, matriarchal. Not even the popular distaste harbored by most Westerosi at the strategies of her kin could faze her, instead moving to fan the flames even more.

It was sooner rather than later in her childhood that she was to be betrothed to the firstborn son of the current Lord Stark, successor to the Warden of the North and the heir of Winterfell. The union between House Reed and House Stark was one of sound reasoning and great advantage to both Northern families, and as Catryn matured, so did her instincts as a fighter, a mother, and a ruling Lady of a Great House. Although she insists on the proper edification of her children, Catryn will always support the thick skins and tough claws of her little wolves, along with their proper upbringings. She just happens to be a very nuclear person; war is a necessary evil to her, and she would let the North be consumed by it in a heartbeat would anyone penetrate the tight-knit family she's worked to create.
