POSITIVE Althea is first and foremost a warm woman, friendly and quick to smile. She is outspoken but not rowdy, with a fairly loud conversation voice and a habit of commanding attention. She is light-hearted and enjoys play, though that is not one to say that she does not take things seriously. Indeed, her moods can shift wildly to and fro and woe to those that are on the end of one of her bad days or during a bout of depression. Still, Althea makes for a wonderful companion otherwise with humor, forthrightness, and an unusually high moral fiber. She is personable and takes great care to know all the people in her service down to their families, as well as quite unashamedly poking her nose into her children's lives and hovering over them like a protective hen. She loves gift-giving and is very affectionate to others. | LIKES - horses / riding - cold weather - alcohol - northerners - her children DISLIKES - dornish - storms - beggars - large cities - dishonor | NEGATIVE An emotional specimen, Althea can be stubborn in her views and would prefer to do things with her heart than her mind, though much of the time she knows better, which leads to a frustrating boil inside of her that tends to stew over time before exploding routinely like clockwork. Unlike her lord husband she most certainly embodies the Baratheon temper, getting heated easily and even causing scenes if the situation is dire. This stance of hers often makes her opposed to him in their affairs, but more than anything it just allows them to consider multiple options seeing as she enjoys arguing for the sake of arguing. But she has learned when enough is enough and though sometimes she may cross the line, she will step down and defer with little animosity to his decisions... though she is nowhere near as vulnerable and accommodating to other people. |

the taming of the shrew
Althea Baratheon née Karstark was born kicking and crying as the firstborn of the Lord and Lady of Karhold. Her disposition as she grew up continued to be wild and defiant, and as her child her days were filled with turns even of exasperating elders and endearing herself to her lord's men. By the time she had reached her late teens she was known for two things, the first being unusual skill atop a saddle and the second being the ability to drink most men under the table, yet she was tempestuous and honorable if nothing else. The woman had long hated the societal custom of ladies being bought and sold essentially for favor among the houses, and aspired to be some kind of knight or at the least a master riding instructor. Due to this, her parents were eager to arrange for her a marriage with a man they thought could control their daughter and quickly, and so it came to pass one day that Althea was told she would be sent off to the Stormlands to marry the lord-to-be, Daemon Baratheon.
Naturally, she struggled. She fought and tried to run and when that failed, attempted to solicit favors from the menfolk or even women that did not find her uncultured. But everything failed and she pouted the whole way to Storm's End. To say that the first few months were miserable would be an understatement, for Althea hated the weather and hated being a wife and hated her insufferably serious husband. Certainly, she made his life hell. But having her firstborn changed her outlook immensely and somewhere, somehow along the years she had become a fine lady of the court, a loving mother of four, and perhaps most importantly not a case of broken-in domestication but instead a willing and dedicated life partner of her lord husband.
