the answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
defender of the vale
Lord Artys Arryn was the first and only child born to Lord Rufus Arryn and his wife, Lady Marilyn Stark. He was named by his parents after Ser Artys Arryn, the falcon knight, who united the Vale and became the first King of the Mountain.
There was much hope surrounding his birth as Lord Rufus had two previous wives from vassal houses who both died in labour. Marilyn Stark was the younger sister of the then Lord of Winterfell and was sent to the Eyrie to marry Lord Rufus to secure allegiances in the North. Though a political marriage, both learned to respect and love one another and after years of trying to conceive a heir Artys was born. It was for this reason that he was named after the most famous Arryn in history as to all Valemen he was seen as the future of the region.
Due to the expectations around Artys when he fell sick at an early age it was of grave concern to the people of the Vale. The illness couldn't be diagnosed by the maester and many professionals were brought in from around Westeros to help the young heir but couldn't cure his symptoms. He remained sick for years and was isolated in the Eyrie by his parents to preserve his health and to quash rumours of his illness. Artys experienced intense fever dreams nightly and there were rumours of his cries being heard as far as the base of the Giant's Lance. Workers in the castle believed it was an act of the gods and that the future of the Vale was cursed.
However Lady Marilyn's love for her only child remained steadfast and she prayed for his recovery at the Eyrie's godswood every evening. It is said that on the eve of Artys' eighth nameday Marilyn dream't of curing her son by placing his head beneath a frozen lake that sat next to a large Heart tree. Believing her dream to be a premonition she traveled to the Mountains of the Moon on a winter night with a sleeping Artys in her arms. It is claimed that a raven guided her to a large Heart tree which resided by a small lake and Lady Marilyn dipped Artys in its freezing waters and slept beneath the tree with him until morning. On the morning of his nameday mother and son returned to the castle with Artys cured of his illness and he never fell sick again after that day.
After that night the old gods seemed to have blessed the young Arryn heir and he quickly began to develop into the leader his parents and the Vale prayed for. He took to his lessons, both education and swordplay, with great enthusiasm and was soon sent to Runestone to squire under Lord Royce a trusted vassal house of the Arryn family. His parents were extremely protective of him and barely allowed him out of their sight, only permitting Artys to leave the Vale for the first time at eighteen. For two years he traveled Westeros on a number of diplomatic engagements until his father seated him at the Gates of the Moon and pronounced him engaged to marry.
Unlike his father, Artys' first marriage was a success and at the age of twenty his daughter was born followed by a son and heir. During his years seated at the Gates of the Moon he was appointed leader of the Valeman forces and went on a number of expeditions to secure stability within the region and across Westeros. During this time Artys was knighted and gained the moniker 'Night Falcon' after he lead many successful missions in the night earning a reputation as a masterful tactician and night hunter. Artys is known to be a talented swordsman and is even more skilled with a bow and arrow after decades of hunting in the mountains. It is said he can track any wild beast or party in the Vale due to his immense knowledge of the region.
After the death of Lord Rufus four years ago Ser Artys Arryn now resides as Lord Artys Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie, Defender of the Vale, and Warden of the East. Lady Marilyn died a few years after her husband leaving her son and his family as the only main branch Arryn's left at the Eyrie.
